What Alt Surface Navigation does

Alt Surface Navigation changes how you move around in the Blender viewport. Instead of pivoting around an arbitrary center, the view turns around the exact point on the surface where the cursor lands.

Holding Alt, left click orbits, right click zooms and middle click pans. Hit detection can be configured to consider all objects, only selected ones, or other modes. This makes close inspection of detailed models far more precise, and sculptors and modelers will notice the difference first.
