Max Smoothing Groups

Developer: Thinkbox Production

Brings numbered smoothing groups to Blender, handling edge sharpness and vertex normals between groups automatically.

What Max Smoothing Groups does

Max Smoothing Groups adapts a workflow familiar from 3ds Max to Blender. Faces are assigned to numbered groups, and Blender then takes care of edge sharpness and vertex normals wherever groups differ.

The panel follows the smoothing group conventions long used in other major 3D programs. It is meant to make hard-surface shading of mechanical parts fast without hand-marking sharp edges. Artists migrating from Max, or game modelers who rely on smoothing groups for exchange, will feel at home.

Key features

  • Assign faces to numbered smoothing groups
  • Edge sharpness handled automatically
  • Panel modeled on classic smoothing group tools
  • Fast shading of hard-surface mechanical parts
  • Vertex normals updated between differing groups
