What Paintlayer Pro does

PaintLayer Pro brings layer-based painting to Blender. Strokes stack non-destructively, so they need not be flattened onto a single image, and a live preview compositor shows the combined result.

The layer stack provides blend modes including Mix, Multiply, Screen, Overlay, Soft Light, Add and Subtract. Each layer has opacity, visibility and lock, masks are painted separately, and groups collapse related layers. Texture painters used to Photoshop can work more freely.
